A few years ago the mineral trend started. It was called a trend and soon many big companies joined in on it – L'oreal, Revlon, Maybelline, MAC and so on.
Many people, makeup artists, and even makeup producers (ones that did not produce a mineral line, of course) kept on saying it's just a trend, and that it's just another commercial way to get the customers to buy more and new products, and that it will all disappear as fast as it appeared.
But a few years have passed. It's not a lot of time, but it's still that little (definitely not for the fashion industry), and the way it looks now, it seems like all those minerals are here to stay.
For example, just take a look at the Color Craft collection by MAC that has recently been released, and the buzz around it all over the net. This collection has tons of mineral products – mineral eye shadows, mineralized skin finish, mineral blush. And that is on top of the liquid/powder foundation, powder and blushes in the permanent line.

A few tips for mineral foundation:
Mineral foundation (loose) usually gives light to medium coverage.
Little product goes a long way – don't over load too much product on, or it will look bad. Use little, and build it into the skin.
In order to increase the coverage – use a drop of wet product on the brush (that can be water / MAC's Fix+ / thermal water / little moisturizer). And of course, some formulas are just more intense than others.
A dense kabuki brush will make the application very easy (I had tried quite few, and the one I recommend the most is the Long Handled Kabuki brush by Everyday Minerals.
Use swirling motion to pick the product into the brush and then to the face.
If by the time you finish applying your makeup you feel the face is a little dry or dusty, spray some thermal water / Fix+ on.
